Pet Safety & Walking Alone During The 'Ber' Months

As the days get shorter and the evenings draw in, our favourite four-legged walking companions still need their daily adventures. But September through December can bring darker mornings, earlier sunsets, colder temperatures and quieter streets — all of which can change the way we approach our usual walks.

The ‘Ber’ months are a beautiful time of year, with crisp autumn air, colourful leaves and wintery walks to enjoy. However, they can also present a few extra safety challenges, particularly for those walking alone or heading out with their dogs after dark.

From keeping yourself and your pet visible, to being aware of your surroundings, choosing safer routes and knowing what to do if something unexpected happens, a little preparation can make a big difference.

In this guide, we’ll share some simple but important tips to help keep you and your four-legged family member safe, happy and comfortable on walks throughout the darker months.

Boost Visibility: Equip yourself and your pet with an active LED light (such as a collar beacon or clip-on light) alongside passive reflective gear like a high-visibility harness or jacket. Wear reflective clothing or a high-vis vest yourself so motorists and cyclists can spot both of you early.

Keep Your Pet on a Lead: Always use a secure, non-retractable lead during night walks, even if your dog has reliable off-lead recall in the daytime. This prevents them from darting into traffic or startling unseen wildlife

Stay Alert and Unplugged: Avoid distractions like headphones or staring at your mobile phone. Rely on your hearing to catch approaching cyclists, cars, or hidden animals.

Stick to Familiar, Well-Lit Routes: Avoid unlit shortcuts, dark alleyways, or overgrown paths. Stick to well-paved, familiar streets or parks where the terrain is easy to see.

Carry a Torch or Headlamp: Illuminate the path immediately in front of you to watch out for uneven ground, broken glass, or wandering animals.

Stay Safe, Stay Seen & Enjoy your Walk

Remember, your safety matters just as much as your pet’s. Stay visible, trust your instincts, let someone know where you’re going if you’re walking alone, and don’t be afraid to change your plans if something doesn’t feel right.

Most importantly, enjoy the time you have together. Our pets don’t care whether it’s raining, dark or freezing cold — they’re simply happy to be by our side. ❤️

So, wrap up, grab the lead, switch on those lights and head out safely.

Here’s to plenty more adventures together, whatever the weather.
